Target Investigations & Security Newsletter December 2006

Newsletter December 2006

Hi,

Welcome to the Christmas newsletter from Target investigations & Security.  You have either received this as you are a current client, have previously been a client or have connections from within the company.

I know you are already looking at winding down and enjoying the end of year festivities, so this will be a little shorter than usual.  Unfortunately crime does not stop, so just be careful out there.

Updates:

In this section I hope to bring you any follow up from issues raised in the last newsletter.

Substance abuse is very topical at this time of the year.  In our first issue this year, we introduced New Zealand Drug Detection Agency (www.nzdda.co.nz) who specialise in this field.  We now find that more and more employees are stealing at their work place to fuel a habit.  We have worked on several serious cases in recent months particularly involving methamphetamine or “P”.  Please contact me or the guys at NZDDA if you wish to find out further information on this fantastic new service.

In our last issue we announced that we are now capable of providing full computer forensics services.  This also generated a great deal of interest, particularly within the corporate world. Again please contact me if you wish to find out more.

Fraud:

Recently KPMG released their latest findings in a Fraud Survey.  There are some extremely interesting facts and figures within this document.  They reveal that more than 50% of NZ businesses continue to be victims of fraud.  The average value of the frauds was $479,000 loss per organisation.

There were 8 cases where the value exceeded $4 million, and 42% of major frauds did not recover any money or goods that were stolen.

The number 1 motive for fraud was greed and to finance lifestyle, with second being personal financial pressures.  There are improvements in detecting fraud with the average detection time now around 362 days (1 year) compared with 456 in 2004.

I know if I was missing $4 million it would probably surface before 12 months!!

The main methods were false invoicing and theft of cash and inventory.  There are some basic measures that businesses should have in place, including procedures and background checks of employees.

ATM Thefts:

Banks have been addressing this problem for some time now, and appear to be doing a good job.  Not only have they put in new measures but they have also been sending out reading material to customers.

However I have recently come across “card traps” which are a small piece of plastic the thieves use to capture the card.  They wait for the customer to use the card and then come to their assistance to gain the “PIN”.  This is not so common in New Zealand, but certainly worth keeping an eye on if you are travelling overseas.

If you experience a problem - Please do not ever give your “PIN” out, and report it to the bank immediately.

If you would like a power point of this method of theft please send me an email.

Surveillance:

Another service that we provide and very topical at this time of year!!  Yes we are able place covert surveillance on wayward partners, so be careful what you do at those work Xmas parties!

This is another useful tool that we utilise with experienced operatives able to provide excellent results.  Not only do we look at matrimonial cases, but also fraudsters, criminals, employment issues, etc.

If there are any questions please contact me to discuss discreetly.

Conclusion:

If there is anything you wish to discus with me please give me a call or drop me an email.  I can guarantee total discretion and 100% commitment.  I look forward to helping you.

As always I appreciate all those who managed to find the time to make contact.  Please visit our website (www.targetpi.co.nz) to find out more about us.  Again we would welcome any feedback and comments regarding our site.

If you missed previous issues – please go to the newsletter page on the website where you can find them in the archives.

Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year,

Gary
