Target Investigations & Security Newsletter November 2007

Newsletter November 2007

Hi,

Welcome to another newsletter from Target investigations & Security.  You have either received this as you are a current client, have previously been a client or have connections from within the company.  If you wish to be removed from our database, please drop me a line.

I have promised not to mention the All Blacks (or the yachting or netball!!) in this newsletter - so I wont, except to say that it's going to be a tough 4 years.  I just really hope that NZ get behind Rugby World Cup 2011 as much as the French did.  I know that security planning is already underway in what will be a huge exercise.

I can't believe that it is the middle of November already and Christmas decorations are starting to hit the shops.  I don't know where the year has gone.  We have had another busy time, with more thefts, frauds and general bad guys to chase.

We continue to receive great response to our newsletters and website(www.targetpi.co.nz).  I appreciate all those who managed to find the time to make contact.  Again we would welcome any feedback and comments regarding our site or the newsletter.  We now have an extensive database set up and receiving this newsletter.

If you missed the any of the other issues – please go to the newsletter page where you can find them in the archives.

Updates:

In this section I hope to bring you any follow up from issues raised in the last newsletter.

You may remember that I completed a course in May as Lead Auditor for Security Management Systems, as well as Occupational Health & Safeth Management Systems.  This course has given me a huge leg up in the security world and I now have a heavy schedule of reviews coming up.  Along with a New Zealand colleague, we are the only ones in NZ to have this.  We are currently working on a new and exciting projectg we hope to take to the market in the New Year.  Will keep you all posted.

Substance abuse also generated a great deal of talk a couple of issues ago and still remains high on the minds of businesses.  We have a very close association with New Zealand Drug Detection Agency (www.nzdda.co.nz) who specialise in this field.  We now find that more and more employees are stealing at their work place to fuel a habit.  Please contact me if you wish to find out further information on this fantastic new service.

Security:

Further to my information regarding security reviews above, we also continue to have strong relationships with all security providers, including security equipment suppliers and installers, and monitoring companies.  This also extends to fencing and gates.  Basically we are a one stop shop for all security needs, with extremely competitive pricing and excellent quality.  Please don't hesitate to contact me for any queries.

Insurance payouts for the cost of crime:

Burglary, vandalism, and vehicle-related crime - committed against ordinary New Zealanders homes and cars resulted in insurance claims of more than a billion dollars since 1999.  Insurance Council figures reveal that insured New Zealanders claim nearly $20 million dollars a month to compensate them for the activities of criminals.

The Insurance Council has obtained the figures from the Insurance Claims Register, which is a database recording claims and why they were made.  The figures dramatically illustrate the impact criminals are having on people in their own homes.

"The cost of crime is measured in the hundreds of millions of dollars and New Zealanders must begin looking for solutions," said Chris Ryan Chief Executive of the Insurance Council.

The figures only show the cost of crime on those people who have insurance and don't include those not insured or the many cases where claims are not made, therefore they are very conservative. The cost of crime is far greater.

Insurers are working on initiatives with the New Zealand Police to address the high incidence of crime against personal property in homes and private cars. The current figure is about $212 million.  For further visit the Insurance Council of NZ website at www.icnz.org.nz

PPSR renewals - Time is running out:

It has been five years since the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) was launched in 2002 which means that all Financing Statements registered from 1 October to 1 November 2002 of the transition period are due to expire.

Avoid the rush and don’t lose your priority. Start renewing all Financing Statements that will automatically expire before 1 November 2007 now.

More information on renewing financing statements is available here (www.ppsr.govt.nz)

Israeli Burglars Abandon Heavy Booty!

Three Israeli burglars who thought they were carrying out a well-planned crime were instead forced to abandon their booty after belatedly realising that "maximum weight" warnings are placed in lifts for a purpose.

The Yediot Ahronot daily reported on Thursday that the three had stolen a safe from the penthouse apartment of an Israeli diamond dealer in Ramat Gan, adjacent to Tel Aviv, on Wednesday afternoon and tried to use the lift to make their escape.

But the safe proved too heavy for the lift, which, instead of stopping on the ground floor, halted one metre lower, and would not move.

Unable to extract both themselves and the safe, the three managed to wriggle though an opening 30 to 50 centimetres wide, and flee, while their booty stayed where it was, to be discovered by an repairman called to the scene by residents of the building unable to summon the lift.

With supreme - and unconscious - irony, the three had entered the building dressed as lift maintenance men.
